Wausau School District

Grade 7 English/Language Arts

I am excited that you will be in my class this year! I would like to share some information with you about myself and about some things that you need to know for the school year.

My husband and I have lived in  Wausau for about 6 years now, and we love it here!

We previously lived in  Rice Lake, WI for 2 years and in Merrill, WI for a little over 13 years. We have a son named William who will be turning 13 years old this May. He is very busy young man, loves to be outside and most sports, and is into everything like a typical 6th Grader!

My husband, Tom, grew up in Milwaukee and is a Social Studies teacher at Wausau East High School. I grew up in Antigo, WI... about ½ hour away from here. I have taught many grades, in addition to being a Literacy Coach to teachers, over the past 20 years.

As a student in my class, I expect you to be more independent in your learning... keeping track of your things, getting work done, and asking questions when you need help. Assignments will be given every day with time to get many of them done in school. You will have access to a PLANNER and Chromebooks to help keep track of things this year. We will have a binder to keep track of ELA (English Language Arts) things for my class this year. I expect students to READ & WRITE every day... both at school and at home. Vocabulary study, Grammar and Poetry will be a part of our curriculum during the year.

Course Description

7th grade English/Language Arts is designed around the Common Core State Standards - a framework for educating students to be competitive at an international level. We utilize well-researched instructional planning strategies for achieving the goals of the Common Core State Standards.  Students will be working with standards in literature, informational text, writing, speaking and listening, and language.  The goal of the course is to develop students’ reading, writing, and communication skills that will best prepare them for future classes in any discipline.

Course Pacing

Students will spend 80 minutes per day working on English and Language Arts in a workshop environment. The 80 minutes will include direct instruction by me, discussion with partners/whole group, written response, group reading/discussing of text being shared, and independent reading/writing/work time. We will have opportunity to move for brain/body breaks during that longer class time.

I am very EXCITED about our school year together and welcome your questions and ideas!
